How it works

Rules and service levels

No refunds
In B2B direct debits, the debtor cannot request a refund from the bank. This significantly reduces credit risk for the creditor.
Faster processes
Collection and information return times are shorter than with CORE direct debits, allowing for greater efficiency.
Mandatory mandate validation
The debtor’s bank is required to verify the existence of the mandate whenever a collection instruction is issued.
Exclusively for businesses
B2B is not available to consumers. A CORE direct debit authorization is not valid for B2B, which requires a specific mandate for this type of collection.

Participants

Roles of each entity

Creditor
The creditor receives the direct debit authorization from the debtor and can then collect payments by sending direct debit instructions to the debtor’s bank.
Creditor’s Bank
This is the bank that manages the payment flow of the creditors in coordination with the debtor’s bank. It holds the creditors’ accounts and sets up agreements to ensure the service operates according to SEPA rules.
Debtor’s Bank
This is the bank responsible for managing the payment flow of its debtors in coordination with the creditor’s bank, where the debtors’ accounts are held.
Debtor
The debtor authorizes the creditor to collect payments through a direct debit authorization. The account is then debited for the collections initiated by the creditor.

More commonly known as a Direct Debit Authorization (DDA), mandate is the term used within the SEPA framework.

The debtor grants the creditor authorization to debit the account, which initiates the process of activating the SEPA DDA. Banks no longer accept SEPA DDAs for activation, and debtors no longer carry out this action either at ATMs or through their bank branches or online banking.

However, debtors can still perform the following actions through banks and self-service channels:

  • Consultation
  • Change of maximum debit amount
  • Change of expiry date
  • Deactivation/Reactivation: this functionality allows the debtor to deactivate the SEPA Direct Debit authorization, preventing new debits from being made. The reactivation functionality enables the authorization to be reinstated
  • Any change of account (IBAN) must be requested directly from the creditor.

Debtors who are consumers, micro-enterprises, or businesses are entitled to special protection measures. For example:

  • Set limits on debits, either by amount or frequency
  • Block your account for any direct debit or choose which creditors are allowed to make SEPA direct debits on your account
  • Refunds: up to 8 weeks after a debit, you can request a refund from your bank. After that, you still have 13 months from the debit date to request a refund if the debit was not authorized by you or was executed incorrectly
